The wave of experimental education has reached Tainan! On May 15, the “FutureLearn Experimental Education Institution,” located in Rende District, Tainan City, officially unveiled its plaque. Former public school principal Liu Hsien-Tung has taken up the role as founding principal. The school centers its pedagogy on the Jena Plan, promoting a four-term academic year, flexible “large block” scheduling without traditional bells, and outdoor experiential learning. These features have attracted attention from parents and students who feel constrained by the conventional education system.
According to the institution, enrollment is currently open for new and transfer students in both junior high and senior high divisions. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary, globally oriented themes, with bilingual instruction and flexible term planning. The goal is to offer diverse pathways that align with both local academic progression and international education standards.
Institution director Ou Yu-Cheng stressed that FutureLearn does not pursue a single standard answer; rather, it focuses on personalized education tailored to each child’s needs. The hope is for the school to become a forward-looking hub for boundary-free learning in Tainan.
Liu Hsien-Tung, who previously retired from public service in Yilan and served as principal at several schools, shared that after transitioning into experimental education, he has remained firmly committed to the belief that "a child's first choice should be something they truly enjoy." Now as a “Tainan son-in-law,” he is passionate about localizing differentiated education and helping students regain motivation and confidence in learning.
He also expressed his vision that FutureLearn should be more than just a school — it should become a platform for integrating diverse educational resources across Tainan, embedding experimental education into the community and paving the way toward internationalization.
